About

artist, photographer, writer. work often starts journalistically, ends conceptually… whatever means to the same end: relay phenomenon to those that do not have direct experience…

currently:

-editing a non-fiction piece on my experiences in darfur. 20 months of writing… now waiting for publishers’ thoughts… huh. maybe one more rewrite… eek.

-shooting a long-term photo based project on the effects of war on the domestic landscape… splitting my time between sedentary editing and vagabonding back and forth and back and forth round, round and round the united states. june-august: alaska. september-november: hitch from north west to the south east and then up through the appalachians. then, finally, done!

focusing more on rural america than anything else, the red states, the down and out, those off the radar, those who often both supported the bush admin and, ironically enough, have had their lives most severely damaged by the regime… the project spans 2001-2008. though, both conceptually and literally, it exists in two parts, shot primarily from 2001-2004 and revisited in 2007 to the present. it’s a wonderful, nutty, grim series and i only wish i could show you… the catch? all shot on film, film, film… and now… all on old american cameras…

¿¿¿contacts/couches/ideas in the USA??? free pie.

looking for contacts in: oklahoma, arkansas, texas, mississippi, alabama, georgia, florida, tennessee, north and south carolina, kentucky, west virginia. the more rural the better. working on long term project documenting the effects of the bush admin/war on the american landscape/spirit (yes spirit: it makes sense, promise). i take off for this leg in 5 days and will be on the go until the new year. looking to meet any and all folks and am down to trade their stories for a slice of pie, a coffee, whatever works. i am also looking for couches to crash on in many of the states listed above, especially those in the appalachians and those prone to cold weather. got just enough money to keep the project going (nowhere near enough to develop it – you’ll see it someday, promise, all 120, 4×5 etc…) so all support is greatly appreciated. i’m house broken and a damn good cook and, for better or worse, most people say i light the creative candle under their ass. yep, poets happen. also, if you have any ideas, know of any rocks that need to be turned, send em my way. i’ve criss crossed country too many times to think i’ve got more than an iota… alright everybody, keep on and stay safe and many thanks to everyone on LS that’s helped me along the way (sorry to do that in a public message but i’m bad at email and i imagine you’re reading this). also, if you feel like jumping on board that’s an option too. best best best. ethan. PS: it’s all about frank. really, we all go shore for a few years but really he didn’t get close. PPS: i’m not doing the americana cynicism thing. this is love and yes i mean that. is love missing in american photography? you gotta think, why do american photographers give so much love abroad, powerful empathetic work, and yet come home and bring nothing but scorn? surely, that doesn’t get us anywhere. right? what happened? support a hamster (me!) and tear down the post-arbus americana cynicism! or just put me in touch with your uncle and let him show me around the farm. that works too.
