Well, Cambodia being a generous place for PJ’s, (there are so many more around since a year or two-time for me to leave the place), and because there has been a major (upward) shift in the number of publications on the newsstands, fixers tend to be rare and expensive. Can’t recommend anyone at this time really… But not so sure you need one anyhow…

Hello,
I might be in Cambodia sometimes soon, but only for travelling. I always wondered something about your beautiful images from the Wa State you shot some time ago John…. You did go there with somebody? How would you advice for stories on that line to be done solo in the region?
Thank you, I hope you can let me know this and if you and others are there sometimes during September I would be glad to have a beer together if you have time as I am only taking a bit of travelling time with my gf who will be based in Bangkok for a year so it would be nice to catch up while there.
I agree that that part of SE Asia might be different but I would like to know your opinion and if you think that Thailand as well could be similar to your description of Cambodia in terms of getting contacts and stories done fixer-less…
Also, for information, did you get clearance by the UWSA for your work there at the time?
Thank you,
Best,
Alex Masi

Wa state images were done during one of the few assignments I had these last years (Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin). We (there were other PJ’s and TV crews) were taken care of by the UNODC to show their efforts in curbing opium production in the region. The burmese government was of course keen to publicise these efforts (which by the way involved the displacement of mountain tribes in questionable circumstances) and obviously we had clearance from all sides.
As for Thailand: I don’t know the country very well except that it is much better organised, which is both good and bad, and that they know more what a PR officer is, which is also both good and bad.

Hi John,
thank you for clearing this up and for your opinion on this!

Hi, for anyone looking for fixers or translators in cambodia, I recommend contacting Kimho Ma ( makimho@gmail.com). If he’s not available, he can most likely connect you with someone else.
